Spring Break with the University Honors Program

Over Spring Break, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Amsterdam and Paris with the University Honors Program. The Honors program offers Cultural Explorations, like this, and Experiential Grants for students year-round.

This trip was more than just a getaway, it was a chance to explore new cultures, immerse myself in history and experience the world in a way that no classroom ever could. Our journey began with a flight to Amsterdam, where we navigated the train system into the city and checked into our hostel. Right away, we dove into history with a visit to the Anne Frank House and a walking tour of the city.

Amsterdam struck the perfect balance between structured learning and free exploration. I was in awe at the Van Gogh Museum, seeing the artist’s works up close, and later we explored the lively Albert Cuyp Market and the De Pijp district. One of my favorite experiences was visiting the Rijksmuseum, home to masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer. To fully embrace Dutch culture, we took a bike tour through Vondelpark, riding through the city like the locals. Between the canals, bicycles and rich history, Amsterdam left an unforgettable impression.

Next, we boarded a train to Paris, eager to explore a city filled with history, beauty and charm. As soon as we arrived, we set out for a Seine River cruise, taking in breathtaking views of landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. Strolling down the Champs-Élysées, I truly felt the magic of Paris come to life.

Paris was like a living museum, and every day brought something new to discover. We visited world-renowned institutions like the Musée d’Orsay and the Louvre, where I stood in awe of the Mona Lisa and so many other masterpieces. One of the most unforgettable moments was climbing the Eiffel Tower, taking in panoramic views of the city. Exploring Versailles was another highlight, walking through its grand halls and breathtaking gardens felt like stepping into another era. From biking through Montmartre to wandering along the Île de la Cité, Paris was full of endless opportunities to learn and explore.

This trip wasn’t just a vacation, it was a transformative experience. I engaged with history firsthand, stepped outside my comfort zone and bonded with peers with a passion for learning. Navigating foreign cities helped me gain confidence and independence in a way that no classroom ever could.

As our journey came to an end, I returned home with more than just souvenirs. I brought back lifelong memories, new friendships and a deeper appreciation for global exploration. This experience was a reminder that the best learning happens beyond the classroom.

Opportunities, like this one, are advertised through a variety of campus resources. Parents, please encourage your students to check their emails, explore university programs and say yes to new opportunities because it can lead to the experience of a lifetime.
