NC State Bucket List: Things to do as a Student

NC State has a lot of different traditions and things to do for students and their families. I have compiled a list of some of the most iconic NC State traditions, as well as some of my favorites!

Participate in the Krispy Kreme Challenge

Since 2004, the Krispy Kreme Challenge has raised more than $2 million for University of North Carolina Children’s Hospital. This event has become the hospital’s largest unrestricted donor. Students start the Krispy Kreme Challenge at the Memorial Bell Tower, then run two and a half miles to the nearest Krispy Kreme, eat 12 donuts, and then run two and a half miles back to the Memorial Bell Tower. The challenge must be completed in one hour. The Krispy Kreme Challenge website has information on how to register and even tips on speed eating donuts.

Paint the Free Expression Tunnel

The Free Expression Tunnel is located near Wolf Plaza. It is a place where anyone can express their thoughts and feelings by spray painting the inside of the tunnel. The tunnel is not restricted to students only, anyone can paint it.

Eat Howling Cow Ice Cream

Howling Cow ice cream is made on campus at the Department of Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Science’s Feldmeier Dairy Processing Lab in Schaub Hall. The milk and cream used in Howling Cow ice cream is produced by over 300 cows at NC State’s farm in Raleigh. Howling Cow ice cream can be purchased in the Talley Market, Hill of Beans in D.H. Hill Library, the Bragaw C-Store and other locations around campus.

Red and White Week

Red and White Week is NC State’s annual week-long homecoming event that celebrates all things NC State. Every year there are different events alumni, students, families, faculty and staff can participate in. Some events include the homecoming football game, Chancellor’s annual fall address, Pack Appreciation day and more.

There is always something to do at NC State! Encourage your student to take advantage of these and other NC State traditions. As a parent, you can participate in some of NC State traditions as well.
