Supporting Student Success: Time Management
College is an exciting time of growth, learning and independence, but with independence comes new challenges. Students have to learn to manage their time effectively. For some, balancing classes, studying, a job and a social life can feel overwhelming, but there are plenty of ways your student can learn to manage their time.
It is important that your student finds what works best for them. This may require trial and error, as what works for some might not work for others. Tools that might be helpful for effective time management include a planner, avoiding multitasking, taking breaks and using studying methods, such as time-blocking or the Pomodoro technique (25-minute work, 5-minute break).
There are also an abundance of campus resources that can help your student. I have used the Academic Success Center countless times for free tutoring. NC State also offers Student Wellness Coaching, which teaches students ways to improve their well-being in many areas, including goal setting, stress management, time management and more. There are resources from the Counseling Center that are helpful as well.
As a parent, you play a pivotal role in this journey by offering encouragement, guidance and your own perspective. Show your student that you are there for them by being supportive and modeling healthy habits. Students who learn to manage their time often feel more in control and less stressed. Learning balance is the key to successful time management. By offering support, you can help your student manage their time better and build habits that will benefit them long after college.
