Protecting the Pack
Sending your student(s) off to college is exciting, but can also be nerve-wracking, especially when it comes to their safety. NC State is committed to making our campus safe for everyone, and fortunately, there are many safety features in place to ensure the safety of students. As a sophomore at NC State, who has seen our police officers in action, I would like to share some of the safety resources with you to hopefully ease any worries you may have.
First and foremost, NC State has its very own Police Department with certified officers in operation 24/7, 365 days a year, providing a wide range of services that include patrol operations, crime prevention, and campus safety. These officers are on patrol across campus in police cars and on horseback to help with any issues students may face. One example of a popular resource is the safety escort service for students studying late at night in the library who don’t feel comfortable walking back to their dorm. This department will have someone escort them to their vehicle or a location on campus. Encourage your student to take advantage of this amazing resource.
NC State also has a BlueLight Telephone System. This is a system of telephone poles placed throughout the campus. In the event of an emergency, students can press the button on any pole, and responders will immediately know their exact location. Each pole is positioned so that another is always visible from where you are standing.
You have most likely heard about WolfAlert, our live alert system that will inform students, staff and faculty of any potential dangerous activity on campus. WolfAlert is limited to those with an @ncsu.edu email, to ensure they get the notifications as quickly as possible. If your student is not receiving these alert messages, have them sign up through their MyPack portal.
We hope your student always feels safe on campus, and if they are not familiar with the above safety resources, encourage them to take a quick look at the links provided! Remind your student to always be mindful of their surroundings and to use the resources that are available to them. It’s also important to note that if you or your student sees suspicious activity, always report it. Your student can play an active role in keeping our campus safe!
