Mid-Semester Check-In

Midterms indicate the middle of the semester. I can attest that trying to juggle multiple classes, tests and papers can be very difficult and stressful. The university offers many resources to help students succeed in their classes. Professors offer office hours throughout the semester (either by appointment or drop-in) that your student can attend to ask any questions they may have about class content or discuss other academic challenges. The Academic Success Center is another valuable resource which offers a wide array of academic support for all students including 1:1 tutoring for certain classes, drop-in tutoring and drop-in academic advising. If your student needs extra assistance in a course they feel is challenging, encourage them to take advantage of campus resources that will help them thrive academically.

To give you some insight into my plan, I am definitely planning on going to the Academic Success Center, Wellness and Recreation and attending office hours for challenging courses. The Academic Success Center can help with tutoring for lots of classes. They usually pair you with another student who has been successful in the course or with other students who can effectively assist you. Office hours are another fantastic resource. The professor is one of the best sources of assistance because they know the material your student will need to know for exams, projects and assignments.

Self-care is becoming increasingly important, especially this semester.  While your student might be studying for exams, it is important to encourage them to set some time aside for themselves, away from academics and studying. Setting aside time for yourself is good because it can help avoid feeling “burnt out”, and can help your student stay calm during stressful times.  Wellness and Recreation is my go to for self-care, specifically group fitness workouts! Another fantastic resource on campus is Prevention Services. If your student is struggling and needs help, encourage them to take advantage of this resource.

Spring break is just around the corner, so we are in the home stretch. Whether your student has a lot of midterms or just one, good luck and we got this!
