10 Useful Study Tips for Students

Hello, Wolfpack Families! Listed below are 10 useful study tips for students to pursue. Study tips should help your student prepare for an upcoming presentation, exam or project that they may not be ready for just yet. These tips also provide some extra resources to seek help or approach the material differently. There are many different types of study tips, and it may be worth giving them all a shot to see which ones are best for your student.

  1. Review and Practice: Ensure your student understands the main topics for each test or project in great depth by encouraging them to review the topics numerous times. It is also recommended for students to practice presentations before presenting them.
  2. Time Management: Don’t start studying the night before! Your student will need more than just one night to absorb crucial information, so they will need to use as much time as needed (hours, days, weeks) to fully prepare for their upcoming task.
  3. Online Resources: When it comes to actively studying, using online resources can be very beneficial. For instance, Quizlet uses online flashcards to help students review their material.
  4. Utilize Academic Support: Students can always access the Academic Success Center for additional assistance with certain courses or topics. Different methods of tutoring are also available if needed by students.
  5. Study with Peers: A great way for students to showcase their knowledge of dense material is to study with peers in their courses. This can include practicing presentations, reciting information out loud or studying in groups.
  6. Find a Secure Study Spot: The Reserve a Room feature is a great way to reserve study rooms at either of our libraries on campus. If your student prefers a bit of background noise while studying, they should check out local coffee shops on and around campus, or study in our Talley Student Union.
  7. Try New Study Methods: Your student can always switch the way they study as a new way to approach the information. For instance, if they usually type notes on a computer, it could be useful to rewrite notes by hand to help with memorization.
  8. Test the Knowledge: It is advised that students take breaks between studying to actively quiz themselves on what they are reviewing to ensure they are learning the material. This can be done alone, or students can have their peers quiz them.
  9. Set Goals and Achieve Them: Students should set goals for themselves in terms of studying. This can include how long they want to study for, how much material they want to study or what grades they wish to receive.
  10. Prioritize Mental Health: It is SO important to remember that while grades are important, so is mental health. Your student should take mental breaks when necessary and always allow time to partake in activities that allow them to destress. Students are welcome to use the NC State Counseling Center for assistance if needed.

I hope these study tips are helpful for your students!
