Getting into a Routine

My name is Ava Wolf, and I am a Parent Ally with the Office of Parents and Families Services at NC State. I have seen firsthand how important it is for students to establish a solid routine, especially during that exciting but sometimes overwhelming first year of college.

Starting college can feel like jumping into a fast-moving river. There is so much for students to adjust to, from navigating classes and dining halls to finding study spots and managing their own schedules. If your student is looking for ideas on where to study, encourage them to check out this article from the Academic Success Center.

Having a routine helped me stay on top of my responsibilities and gave me a sense of control during a time of many changes. What worked best for me was setting aside specific times for studying, meals, and breaks. Using a calendar helped me plan my week, allowing me to balance academics with time for friends and self-care.

As a parent, one of the best ways you can support your student is by encouraging them to take advantage of campus resources. NC State offers free tutoring through the Academic Success Center, as well as wellness services designed to help students create routines that support their academic and personal goals. For example, every student is eligible for up to four free Wellness Coaching sessions each semester. If your student is looking to focus on their well-being but is not sure where to begin, this is a great place to start.

It is also helpful to remind your student that their routine does not have to look like anyone else’s. Flexibility is key as they adjust to college life. And if the transition ever feels overwhelming, that is completely normal. NC State offers a wide range of mental health resources, including drop-in services, group support, and individual counseling through the NC State Counseling Center.

The first year of college brings a lot of change, but with your support and encouragement, your student will find their rhythm. I am excited for all the experiences ahead for them and for you as part of the Pack!
