End-of-Semester Reflection

As the semester comes to a close, students typically have moments to reflect on their achievements and challenges during the semester. Additionally, preparing for finals brings a wide range of emotions, including stress, excitement, and great relief. As your student(s) make plans to come home for the holiday, this is the ideal time for families to start making plans to identify ways to encourage their students to discuss how they managed these emotions for not only finals but the entirety of the semester. This is a great way for families to reconnect with their students at the end of the fall semester. These reflective conversations are not only about evaluating performances, but also about building students up to continue improving academically, mentally, and socially in the spring semester.

For many families, it may be difficult to know how to start these reflective conversations and reconnect with their student when they get home for the winter break. Reviewing the  Conversation Calendar is a good place to find conversation starters/ topics, not just for December and January, but for the entire year. This calendar provides many helpful discussion topics to help families navigate these timely conversations throughout the year. Asking students what went well in their semester, what went poorly, what they learned and what they might change going forward can give insight into their thought processes and mental well-being.

Another important part of the reflection process is planning for the future, which involves looking ahead to the next semester. The Student Services Center Announcements lists important dates to prepare for the Spring ‘26 semester, including deadlines that may need to be completed over Winter Break. Encourage your student to spend time reviewing the Academic Calendar to know when classes begin, the last day to add/drop, and dates of Spring Break are highly recommended. Guiding students through the reflection and planning process will allow them to turn the semester’s experiences into meaningful momentum for the rest of the year. These discussions build a support network for students, encouraging them to continue their success in the spring semester.
