Welcome Admitted Students and Their Families

As decisions have now been released, I wanted to say congratulations to the future members of the Wolfpack! We can’t wait for you to join our community. Parents, it’s time to breathe that sigh of relief you’ve been holding onto. Your students have worked incredibly hard, and you’ve supported them the whole way, so be proud of this amazing accomplishment!
As someone who is finishing her freshman year next month and will be a sophomore soon, I was in your students’ shoes not too long ago and all I can say is to tell them to enjoy it. When people tell you that college goes by fast, it truly does. My freshman year has been so fun and has helped me grow immensely as a person. Here are some tips that I’ve learned that you can share with your students to help get them prepared for the best freshman year:
- Stay on top of things: College can be chaotic and falling behind is just going to make things worse. Urge them to get their homework done on time, go to office hours, and check their email every day. I recommend a planner to help keep track of their busy schedule.
- Research clubs/organizations: NC State has tons of organizations for your student to join. I’ve met so many amazing people through the clubs I’m in and have been a part of so many wonderful events.
- Time management: The school structure your students have had their entire life is now gone and it’s up to them to choose what their schedule is like. Some people like to get their classes done by noon and others avoid Friday classes. Encourage your student to take some time to plan their schedule on the Enrollment Wizard and think about what would work best for them and allow them to get their work done.
- Healthy Habits: College is stressful, so leading a healthy lifestyle can help combat that stress. They can do this by eating nutrient-rich foods to power their brain through class, taking a workout class at Carmichael with friends, and getting a good night’s rest.
This is a new chapter of their life and yours, and it’s going to take some getting used to. College is a chance for them to build their independence, but they are still going to need your help now and then. Trust that your students are in good hands, and encourage them to make the most of every opportunity that comes their way. Go Pack!
