Pack Students Making a Global Impact: Alternative Service Break 2025
At NC State, learning doesn’t stop when classes do and for some of our incredible students, school breaks are a time to serve, learn and explore the world. The Alternative Service Break (ASB) program gives students the chance to make a difference in communities across the globe while gaining a deeper understanding of culture, leadership and service.
Each ASB team is led by student leaders and guided by a faculty or staff advisor. Before traveling, participants spend weeks preparing together — learning about the local culture, building teamwork skills and reflecting on how their service connects to broader global challenges.
During the trip, students engage directly with local communities, tackling real-world issues like water quality, affordable housing, youth education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. Beyond hands-on service, they also share meals, stories, and experiences that build lifelong memories and friendships.
This upcoming Winter Break (December 12–19, 2025), NC State students will be traveling to two exciting destinations:
Chile: Adventure Volunteer
Students will join Mapuche Indigenous families in southern Chile during the vibrant harvest season. Together, they’ll work on sustainable farming projects including harvesting crops, tending gardens and caring for the land. Along the way, they’ll experience Chile’s rich culture through community workshops, shared meals and even a hike up the breathtaking Villarrica Volcano.
Dominican Republic: Service for Peace
In partnership with Servicio Para la Paz, students will collaborate with Dominican university volunteers on community development projects that promote education, clean water and sustainable infrastructure. Since 2005, this partnership has helped strengthen more than 14 communities through hands-on service and cultural exchange.
Through Alternative Service Breaks, NC State students are doing more than volunteering; they’re growing as global citizens, leaders and problem-solvers. Parents and families can take pride in knowing their students are spreading the Wolfpack spirit of “Think and Do” far beyond Raleigh, making a real difference in the world while gaining experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime.
