How Working as a Student Employee Enhanced My College Experience

One of the best jobs a student can get is right here on campus, and so many opportunities are available! Not only is it convenient for students to get to and from work, but many of these jobs allow for flexible schedules because being a student comes first. I have had two experiences with on-campus employment, and I have learned so much about NC State, higher education, and about myself as well.

The first on-campus job I have had is this one! I started my position as a Parent Ally for the Office of Parents and Families Services in the Fall of 2023 as I was beginning my sophomore year. I have enjoyed this job because I was able to choose my schedule and get to participate in campus-wide events such as Experience NC State and New Student Orientation. During these events, I had the opportunity to speak on panels and give presentations to parents, which at first seemed super scary and nerve-wracking, but once I found my groove, it was enlightening to see what I was capable of. I never thought I would be able to confidently stand up in front of an audience and speak without a script, but the more I did it, the easier it became and the more I enjoyed it! I have also gotten the opportunity to help plan and run Parents and Families Weekend and Spring Fling, both of which are signature events hosted by the Office of Parents and Families Services. I was able to learn valuable skills in event planning, interpersonal communication when speaking with Wolfpack families and managing a team of fellow students and volunteers from the Family Ambassador Program. I recommend on-campus jobs for the specific reason that they allow students to build incredibly important life skills in the comfort of their university and meet a plethora of people from various departments on campus as well as families from everywhere.

The next on-campus job I have had is in the Wilson College of Textiles Dyeing and Finishing Pilot Plant, where I am also currently employed. I reached out to the laboratory manager directly to see if there was any availability for me to work in the lab as a student, and sent my resume along with that message. Next thing I knew, I had a job! I wanted to gain more experience in the field I was studying, Textile Technology, and thought a hands-on job in a lab would be the perfect chance. I have gained so much knowledge and experience from this position because I am taught how to safely and correctly use all the equipment and how to execute various procedures while meeting clients from the Textile industry, whose projects I am working on. This allows me to make plenty of connections that could be useful when I’m looking for a job or internship in the future.

On-campus employment has offered me the ability to build numerous skills, form friendships with the other students I work with, and meet new people from a variety of industries. I have appreciated the flexibility and support these jobs have given me as a student, so I can succeed in both my academic and professional lives. Encourage your student to check out what on-campus jobs are available for a one-of-a-kind experience they won’t get anywhere else!
