Get to know the Resources!
Transferring to NC State in the middle of my college career was one of the most difficult yet best moments of my educational experience. Similar to transferring, shifting from high school to college can be a very daunting experience for students. Although, with all the right support and resources from the university, the transition can be made a lot easier. NC State offers a wide variety of resources not only for first-year students but for all students.
College courses are a very different experience from high school classes. Students take on a greater responsibility since they hold more independence. Students, like myself, will struggle at some point in their college experience whether it be with their academics, social life or even living on their own. I have found the academic support services on campus very invaluable. Whether it’s free tutoring through the Academic Success Center, which helps clarify difficult concepts or the writing labs that guide me through papers, these resources are designed to help me and my peers excel here at NC State.
College isn’t just about academics – our well-being is just as important. The counseling services on campus provide a safe and confidential environment to talk about anything that’s on our minds. My sophomore year I signed up to meet with an on-campus counselor on a bi-weekly basis. There are some days when I have nothing on my mind, but it always feels good to talk with someone about things that may be.
Encouraging your student to tap into these resources can make a huge difference in their college experience, setting them up for success both now and in the future.
