Limiting Distractions While Studying

As we approach finals, your student(s) may struggle with studying. I know I do, especially because it is easy to be distracted now with things like social media. So, I have compiled a list of things I do to limit distractions while studying.

Study Buddies

Study buddies are a great way for students to work together. It also gives them someone to hold them accountable if one of them begins getting distracted. My roommate and I study together a lot during finals and it helps both of us get things done. We are also able to ask each other questions or advice which is helpful as well. If your student needs a study buddy for a specific subject or class they can use the Navigate App to help them find other people looking for study buddies.

Studying at the Library

Visiting D.H. Hill Library or Hunt Library is a good way to limit distractions. Both libraries have designated quiet study spaces and reading rooms. These areas make it easy for students to study without getting distracted by other students talking or being noisy. Students can also reserve study rooms which are usually located in quiet areas of the library. The rooms are equipped with many helpful things such as TVs where students can present powerpoint presentations and tables that can be used as whiteboards!

Study Methods

Some methods I use to limit distractions while studying is to either leave my phone at home, or turn it off and put it away. Some students have also begun using the 25-5 study method. It is a method where you study for 25 minutes, then take a break for 5 minutes.

These study methods help me immensely throughout the semester and during finals. I hope you share them with your student(s) and that they can benefit from them as well!
