Applying to Grad School
The fall of senior year is typically when many graduating students start thinking about their plans for next year. Whether applying for jobs or masters/doctoral programs, it can get pretty stressful trying to plan it all out.
I am in the process of applying to graduate programs. There is so much more that goes into it compared to when I was applying for undergraduate programs. I’ve outlined some tips and resources for students that may help in this process.
- Undergraduate Writing Center – Personal Statement/Essay Reviews
One of the most critical pieces of your application is your personal statement and essays. These are supposed to highlight your achievements and why you want to pursue a program at a particular university. Encourage your student to utilize this resource, having essays proofread and ensuring they are of good quality.
- Professors, Employers, etc. – Letters of Recommendation
Many graduate programs require letters of recommendation from professors and employers as part of your application. It is essential to ask the people you want to write your recommendation letters well in advance to give them time to prepare and submit them. If your student is applying to graduate programs, encourage them to ask their recommenders as early as possible to make sure they are good to go when the deadline comes.
- Career Development Center – Resume Building/Interview Prep
The Career Development Center is a valuable resource for students to consult before the grad school process. It may sound like they are only there for career guidance, but counselors offer advice on resume building and cover letters. They even help with interview prep!
There are many campus resources for students to take advantage of during their time at NC State. If your student is in the process of applying for graduate programs, encourage them to use the resources available to them!
Best of Luck to your student!
