Things to Do In Between Classes

Greetings Wolfpack Families! Sometimes students have a hard time finding something to do in between classes because they have so little time, or a bit too much. Below are some suggestions on how students can take advantage of these small breaks. Staying productive and entertained between classes prevents students from losing motivation throughout the day and oftentimes keeps them in a routine. Healthy habits both inside and out of class ensure your student can thrive under the pressure of a college environment. Additionally, knowing how to take small breaks in between classes can be a relief during stressful times.

A great way to create a routine is by taking up an activity or hobby that can be repeated every day or week. If your students need a mental boost, encourage them to engage in student activities in between classes that will be stimulating for their minds. Exercising is a great habit for your student to stay mentally active while pursuing a healthier lifestyle, but this is not the only habit that can be mentally stimulating. Try talking to your student about picking up a new book to read. Reading new material out of “want” rather than “necessity” helps the brain take a break from academic stresses while actively keeping the mind stimulated. In reality, sometimes a simple walk around campus serves as the best option as well on a sunny day.

However, not all students have the time in between classes to take up these habits. When time is a very limiting factor, encourage your student to ease themselves into the next subject by starting on some homework or reading over sections of a textbook. Both of these actions help prime your student for what is about to come and it allows them to get ahead in their classes if time allows. If your student needs a break between classes, encourage them to simply take a seat, grab a coffee using our campus meal plans and simply enjoy the break. Sometimes the greatest work that can be done between classes is nothing at all.

Maybe your student has class around midday and they often get hungry during this time. Our dining halls are open throughout the day, so remind your student about making use of these in between classes if they are able. Additionally, NC State’s campus has multiple areas where students can grab a snack on-the-go and continue about their day. Classes around midday open up many more opportunities for your student to interact with other students on campus as it typically when campus is the most populated. Spending a short amount of time with friends can really take the edge off a bad day or further brighten a good one, especially after a good joke or two has been cracked.

Hope these ideas support your students!
