Living Off Campus

It is almost that time of year. For returning students, the time is approaching to make the decision of whether to live on campus or off-campus. The University Housing room selection process began for continuing students for the 2022-2023 school year starting November 15, 2021. The room selection application is open through February 4, 2022. Students can choose from a variety of different styles including hall style, suite-style, hotel style and even apartment style. For important dates and timelines, please visit University Housing’s important dates list.

While living on campus is an option, students also have the option to live off-campus in either a house or apartment. There are a variety of different buildings and properties around campus ranging from Hillsborough St. to Western Blvd. and even closer to Centennial Campus.

In my opinion, most students who have classes on main campus will move to either Hillsborough St. or Western Blvd. (the two main streets the university lies between). For lots of students, there are lots of factors to consider when choosing to move off-campus. Personally, the biggest factors that came into consideration were cost, independence, and roommates. How much will the rent be? Will I have my own room and my own space? Will I get to live with my friends?

For whatever reason your student wants to move off-campus, the university has resources to support you and your student through that process.

One resource University Housing offers is the off-campus housing search. This tool highlights which properties are around campus, which properties have availability for the term you are looking for, and the cost. This is an incredible resource because you can see all the options you have to choose from. Students can see apartment options ranging from studio apartments to 5 bedrooms. Results can also be filtered by location and available amenities, like parking so your student can pick the option that works best for them!

When it comes to living off-campus, students will have to sign a lease. Because leases are legal contracts, the university has resources to help students review the lease and sign it. Student Legal Services offers a variety of services, so your student should take advantage.

With housing options filling up fast, it is important to take time to talk with your student about their plans for housing next year. This way, you can work to make a plan and get everything squared away before this spring semester comes in full swing.
